CONNECTIONS 2024: GLASS FROM EVERY ANGLE
GAS Member Exhibition
The Glass Art Society showcases works from current GAS members each year at the Annual Conference. All artwork is submitted via an online application, and then is juried for awards and inclusion in the show. The professional jury evaluates all eligible entries and selects winners based on originality, innovation, and intentionality.
The 2024 Member Exhibition is generously sponsored by The Glass Furnace.
First Place | “Towel Rack” by Narrae Kang

“In this year’s Member Exhibition, GAS Members from around the world showcased their ingenuity, innovation, and talent. We are excited to share this exquisite work with the global glass community.”
The 2024 Member Exhibition jurors were:
Carolyn Herrara-Perez, curator, USA
Katherine Huskie, artist, UK
Richard Meitner, artist, The Netherlands
Narrae Kang (📍Republic of Korea), "Towel Rack," cold worked and engraved glass, window frame, brass, 2023. Photo credit: Gun Ha Park. 111.7 x 59.3 x 3 cm.
Artist Statement: By thoughtfully crafting and paying meticulous attention to detail, I invite viewers to reassess their perceptions and acknowledge the artistic qualities inherent in the elements of housewives' lives. The repetitive nature of household chores mirrors the painstaking process of artistic creation, akin to the meticulous application of countless engraved dots that remain inconspicuous without light. I cultivate a respect for domestic labor through my work, fostering a heightened appreciation for the commitment, skill, and creativity involved. This artistic exploration serves as a visual reminder and bridges the divide between the domestic realm and the realm of art.
Second Place | “Boolean Sweep” by Joshua Kerley and Guy Marshall Brown

Joshua Kerley + Guy Marshall Brown (📍United Kingdom), "Boolean Sweep," kiln-cast glass foam, 2024. 40 x 24 x 24 cm.
Artist Statement: The latest output from our collaborative practice has seen us pair our recently developed modular mould method with kiln-cast glass foam. During the casting process the glass foam froths and swells, filling the mould void and oozing out of the opening. Under pressure, the glass expands lightly into the seams, leaving subtle but present traces of the segmentary nature and digital origins of the mould. Our works demonstrate the technical possibilities within glass casting; they are deliberate attempts to make objects that challenge the preconception of the glass medium and harness the playful aspect of our collaborative workflow
Third Place | “Flying Bird with Seven Lenses” by Kirsti Taiviola
Kirsti Taiviola (📍Finland), "Flying Bird with Seven Lenses," blown glass, light, mixed media, 2023. 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 m.
Artist Statement: Flying Bird with Seven Lenses is an attempt to reach the essence of air. It fascinates me how air is beyond the reach of our sense of sight. With our eyes, we can detect the existence of air just by observing the movement around us; by looking at a flying bird we can understand that the air carries it, but the air itself remains invisible. By harnessing light and glass, I've interpreted the movement of a flying bird. The artwork is my first stop-motion animation device that uses free-form hand-blown glass lenses to create a projection of a moving image."
